This portrait is one of the residents of the Académie de France in Rome in his disguise Masquerade organized in 1748. The young man's face, smeared with shoe polish, the same color as the background, disappears under the glare of golden ornament, shiny beads and scarlet feathers. Only the eyes and lips glow in the dark side. The model was identified as Jean Moreau, architect and resident at the Villa Medici from 1746 to 1752.

The three painted studies of the Petit Palais were performed on the occasion of organized Masquerade by residents of the Académie de France in Rome during carnival 1748.Le theme of this event, lord of the caravan to Mecca, had was proposed by JM Vien.
