The Cleveland Museum of Art
The Cleveland Museum of Art, located in Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the oldest and largest museums in the United States. The museum was founded in 1913 by prominent local citizens – including John Huntington (who also assembled a fine collection of American art), Marshall B. Crawford and Francis J. Ober – to bring art collections to Northeast Ohio (Cleveland). The museum's holdings include more than 45,000 works spanning 5,000 years of world culture. The art collection contains the largest extant collection of Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities outside of Europe and the United States. It also houses European paintings, medieval and Renaissance artworks, contemporary crafts, photographs, prints, and an internationally renowned collection of Asian art. The museum is also home to the Cleveland Digital Image Collection, which holds more than 138 million photographs and artworks in its online databases.
