Madly in love with the young Proserpine, the god of the Underworld then snatches her picking flowers and leads in habite.L'histoire that darkness of Pluto and Proserpina is told in the "Metamorphoses" of Ovid and repeated by Claudian, in the fifth century. This is the story of the latter that was particularly inspired when Rubens was commissioned a large painting depicting the abduction of the young goddess in 1614-1615. This was the first opportunity for the artist to treat the subject. The sketch, which only demonstrates what the finished picture was destroyed in a fire in 1861, translated all the fire of Pluto and the violence of the kidnapping. The galloping horses, the young woman who spills her basket of flowers in the fall and the body thrown from Proserpine insist, not without moralizing referred, the fragility of women.The treatment of "The Rape of Proserpina" proceeds from the nervous and quick key feature of the Rubens painting in his return from Rome. "The 'Rape of Proserpine "went through several public sales: the sale Trouard in Paris February 22, 1779, cat. No. 94 (sold 600 pounds); Sale Lebrun, Paris, April 11, 1791, cat. No. 72 (sold 770 books Castelmore); Sale Castelmore in Paris December 20, 1791, cat. # 45. During this last sale, Alexandre Payet Joseph bought the sketch on behalf of President Henrietta, for $ 840 livres.En 1800, the table was still in the Haudry collection and was sold on August 4 in Orleans by Henry merchant, Cardinal Joseph Fesch. It was presented in the "Camera di Rubens" in Falconieri Palace in Rome. After the death of the cardinal, his collections were inventoried and sold. "The Rape of Proserpina" was the inv number. No. 3330 and went on sale in Rome on 17 and 18 March 1845 (Cat. No. 200-161). At an unknown date, the sketch joined the collection of Professor Schrakner in Strasbourg. Then one of the brothers Dutuit in Rouen. In 1902, she entered the collections of the City of Paris, thanks to the legacy of Augustus Dutuit.
