The theme of the house of cards was very popular in the eighteenth century as "vanitas" modern, he associated with the kind of scene a meditation on the fragility of life.
This painting is a copy with variations of "House of Cards" by Chardin, who is currently in an English private collection, to Nuneham Castle, which had been exposed by the artist at the Academy 2 July 1735. The table of Cognac-Jay museum is reversed compared to the original as executed after burning. The painter has, moreover, changed the composition by adding a sketched canvas on a bridge and on the table, a palette and brushes.
