Notes from the Curator: The inscription on the reverse indicates that this is a self-portrait. It does appear to be a self, portrait to judge from the similarity of the likeness to the portrait of the artist by CHARLES LORING ELLIOTT, C. 1845, in the collection of the National Academy of Design. Its strong lighting and somewhat photographic quality are characteristic of a new degree of realism that was transforming Spencer's formerly romantic manner at this point in his career and was to dominate his future work, as indeed it would that of Elliott's. On the other hand, Spencer's portrait of himself is more flattering than his likeness by Elliott. The self-portrait's hard, direct gaze is encountered in numerous other portraits by Spencer. Spencer's wife, who remained in New York City rather than move with her husband to upstate New York in 1858, later charged him with insanity. His letters do not appear to support this charge.

Select the material of your choice
The product dropdown menu ofers you the chance to select your prefered size and material. Choose among the following product options now to match your preferences in size and material:
- Acrylic glass print (with real glass coating): An acrylic glass print, often labelled as a fine art print on plexiglass, changes the original artwork into gorgeous décor and makes a distinct alternative to aluminium and canvas fine art prints. The artwork is being printed with the help of modern UV direct print technology. This makes intense, sharp colors. The plexiglass with real glass coating protects your chosen art print against light and heat for up to 60 years.
- The canvas print: A printed canvas, not to be mistaken with an artwork painted on a canvas, is a digital copy applied directly on cotton canvas fabric. It makes the plastic effect of three dimensionality. The great advantage of canvas prints is that they are relatively low in weight, which means that it is quite simple to hang up your Canvas print without additional wall-mounts. Canvas prints are suited for any kind of wall.
- Poster print (canvas material): Our poster print is a printed canvas with a nice finish on the surface. The poster print is used for placing the art replica using a custom frame. Please keep in mind, that depending on the size of the poster we add a white margin of something between 2-6cm around the painting in order to facilitate the framing.
- Aluminium dibond print: An Aluminium Dibond print is a print with a true depth - for a modern impression and a non-reflective surface structure. This UV print on Aluminum Dibond is one of the most demanded entry-level products and is a truly modern way to showcase art, since it puts 100% of the viewer’s attention on the replica of the artwork.
