At the age of ten years Franz Eybl entered the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts one, studied initially sculpture, but soon moved to landscape painting and history painting and trained in lithography. His painted in oil portraits found great popularity especially because of the excellent Technique and its image fidelity. Through his lithographic portraits he gained great importance and the then leading lithographers Josef Kriehuber was identified. The study of genre painting sat at Eybl one from the thirties, where he presented his "models" with a preference before the landscape of the Salzkammergut in each costume. Most are Einfigurenstücke, which are characterized mainly by their painterly quality, but do not overlook a certain detachment. The presentation of the reading girl, an unusual theme for the painter, is one of its intimate character of his best works. The girl is being held full-frame and against a neutral background; lost in thought, it seems to perceive nothing of his surroundings. About this privacy addition, however, the painting stands out due to the excellent handling of color, which, reduced to a few warm tones, rich nuanced and may reflect when read by a well-balanced lighting the sensation of the girl. At the same time this serves as a document for developing in the 19th century reading culture that from now on no more scientific or didactic claims to meet, but a broader social class as entertainment was available.
