In the church, many characters of all conditions, peasants, soldiers, cross, ecclesiastical, noble throng lined up to pay their last tribute to the Count of Flanders, Charles the Good, whose body is exposed to the right. A bishop carrying a bolster, back, performs the funeral service to the right end of the composition. It is surrounded by the most important dignitaries. In the foreground aligned, monks hooded kneeling pray for the deceased. Upstairs at the bottom, behind curtains, a character crowd looks on.

The Count of Flanders, Charles the Good (1083-1127) was the son of Cnut, King of Denmark and Adela of Flanders, daughter of Robert the Frisian. He inherited Flanders by his mother in 1119 and, after fighting in the Holy Land and refused the throne of Jerusalem, administered a just man in fee, which earned him great popularity and his nickname. He was assassinated March 2, 1127 in the Saint-Donatien in Bruges by the henchmen of Bertulf, chancellor of Flanders and first buried on site. His vassals and his overlord, the King of France Louis VI, besieged the fortress where rioters barricaded. After the massacre of these, the king and the bishop organized a solemn funeral in the church St. Kitts. The story of this assassination is known from the chronicle Galbert of Bruges, "Vita beati Caroli Boni" which inspired Van Beers for the design of the Flanders history toile.Féru under the dukes of Burgundy, Van Beers s' directly inspired by the sculptures of Burgundian tombs to build its membership.
