Artwork description by the museum's website (© - by Los Angeles County Museum of Art - Los Angeles County Museum of Art)
This unusually large oil-on-copper painting, by artist Nicolás Enríquez, is modeled after Juan Rodríguez Juárez’s famous canvas of 1719–20, in Mexico City's cathedral. In the lower left, Enríquez inserted the extemporaneous portrait of Mexico City's viceroy Pedro de Castro y Figueroa (reigned 1740–41), who died tragically of yellow fever a year after taking his post. The kneeling children are probably portraits of the viceroy's sons. Referencing Juárez’s painting is an important art historical gesture: it demonstrates that the tradition of local painting within Mexico was as significant as the influence of European sources when creating new compositions.
