Original artwork description from Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris website (© - by Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris - Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris)

In a Dutch interior, a seated woman looked at a piece of lacework made using a spindle. Placed next to an open window, the lace wearing a dress and a black hat, and a white collar. Many everyday objects are placed on the floor, wall and a buffet at the bottom. On the right, the sheet on the table is lifted on board.

A pupil of Rembrandt, Nicolas Maes has specialized in genre painting and portraiture. As in the works of Pieter de Hooch or Hoogstraten, light bathes its calm interior where his silent figures apply to any household chore. His works reflect the lessons of his master powerful and dramatic chiaroscuro, red and warm brown, thick shadows.
