Supplemental information by the museum (© - by The Metropolitan Museum of Art - www.metmuseum.org)
Johnson, the son of an enslaved woman and a white man, was the first known African American artist in the United States to earn his living as a professional portrait painter. He worked in Baltimore, Maryland, from about 1789 to 1825, painting likenesses of sea captains, shopkeepers, and merchants and their families. In this portrait of Edward Pennington Rutter (ca. 1798–1827) and Sarah Ann Rutter (1802–1843), children of Captain Joshua and Mary Pennington Rutter of Baltimore, Johnson demonstrated his affinity for bright, strong colors and precise detail, as seen in the red bird at the left and the strawberries held by the children. There is an air of stillness, of suspended action, in Johnson’s portraits that is emphasized here by the intensity of the children’s gazes.

Select the item material you will hang up on your walls
In the product dropdown selection you can pick your individual material and size. We allow yout to choose among the following variants:
- Canvas print: The canvas print, which shall not be confused with a canvas painting, is a digital replica applied onto cotton canvas fabric. A printed canvas of your favorite masterpiece will allow you to transform your new fine art print into a large size collection piece like you would see in a real gallery. The great advantage of canvas prints is that they are relatively low in weight, which implies that it is easy and straightforward to hang your Canvas print without any wall-mounts. A canvas print is suited for any kind of wall.
- Acrylic glass print (with real glass coating): An print on acrylic glass, which is sometimes labelled as a print on plexiglass, changes your favorite original artwork into wonderful décor. Your own version of the work of art will be manufactured with modern UV printing technology. The great upside of a plexiglass art print is that contrasts and also image details become exposed because of the very fine gradation. The acrylic glass protects your chosen art replica against light and external influences for several decades.
- Aluminium dibond print (metal): An Aluminium Dibond print is a material with an impressive effect of depth. Colors are luminous in the highest definition, the fine details of the print appear crisp.
- Poster print (canvas material): A poster is a UV printed sheet of flat canvas paper with a granular texture on the surface, that reminds the original work of art. Please keep in mind, that depending on the size of the canvas poster print we add a white margin 2-6cm round about the work of art to facilitate the framing with your custom frame.
