The ceiling, treated allegorically and composed in an upward spiral, is the parade of various races emerging from ancient times, advancing to civilization and progress. Bottom of the table, a prehistoric family follows the procession of men in armor and riders on their way to a bright sky. The painter gives his motorcade ideological significance. The upward movement toward the "civilization and light" is driven by what he called the Aryan races. This vision of a Wagnerian lyricism is in the colonial context but also antidreyfusard the last years of the nineteenth century France.

April 18, 1893, the State entrusts Cormon the realization of a decorative ensemble of ten panels wall and a ceiling for the amphitheater of Paleontology and the Museum of Anthropology of Natural History in Paris. Fruit of lengthy documentation and conducting preliminary sketches, the auditorium's decor is inaugurated in 1898 and is still in place today. It presents a series of scenes recreating what one could imagine the early days of humanity in view of new scientific knowledge.
