In a stable, the brown horse at rest is shown in full and profile with a flange.

Passionate about horses, trained by Carle Vernet had imported into France English taste of horse paintings, Géricault their devoted part of his work. This painting belongs to a series of four horses in the stable studies performed in 1818 at Dolphin stud farm, located in the Bois de Boulogne.
