The "Roman knights of glory", large carousel gave 5 to 7 April 1612 to mark the marriage of Louis XIII with Anne of Austria, Place Royale (now Place des Vosges), currently 4th district. Historic stage. Urban landscape. Parades, floats, stage combat, castle, forums, tournament, lists, horses, wild animals, spectators.
Upon entry to the Carnavalet Museum, the painting was attributed to Claude Chastillon, due to the existence of an engraving of the artist, showing the same event. The work is inspired probably this etching, although the treatment of architecture is less accurate and the pavilions on the east side have been deleted. A detailed description of the festival was published in 1612 by François de Rosset, in a large volume of 364 pages, divided into three days. The impression of confusion that emerges from the description of the carousel is due to the fact that the author of the picture, as well as Chatillon, simultaneously represented episodes of the festival that took place throughout the three days.
