Rudolf Wacker once called himself an "advocate of unnoticed modest things" and a "portraitist of objects". His still-lifes, often compositions with a table set against the wall and a few pictorial elements repeatedly appearing in various combinations, oscillate in their new-objective clarity between reality and fiction and create dream-like visions with a magical atmosphere. Two heads from 1932 are among his best-known works, as this work was represented at the 19th Venice Biennale in 1934. In the same year it was added to the collection of the Modern Gallery (today Belvedere) as a dedication of the Julius Reich Artists Foundation, where it was exhibited alongside Albin Egger-Lienz's Dance of Death and Ferdinand Hodler's Emotion. He had already used variations of the children's drawing of a sad face pinned to the wall as a central element in earlier works. Here he combines it with a yellow canary, a flower vase with daisy and the second head, a female wooden bust. In 1934, she reappears as Lädierter Kopf, where she unmistakably stands in a political context: In his diary, Wacker confirms the description that he depicts the ruins of the bourgeois world. In 1939, at the age of only 46, the confessing anti-fascist died of the consequences of two heart attacks he had suffered during a house search and cross-examination by the Gestapo.
