After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna traveled Walther Gamerith Italy, Dalmatia, France and Germany. From 1934 he exhibited portraits, nudes and landscapes in the Viennese artist house that elected him in 1939 as a member. The painter devoted himself to photography and drawing, but his main interest was landscape painting, whose motives delivered especially his home Eggenburg and the Attersee region. Dominated by the military service and the war experience, his art changed sustained after the Second World War. There are no longer left condition images, but scenes full of melancholy and accusatory visions. Dance of the cripple emerged in the 1940s and shows a group of gray-haired and wounded figures that move under dark night sky to the rhythm of the drum beat. With distorted faces they follow reluctantly to the call of death represented as a drummer. [Naima Wieltschnig, Michaela Köppl, 4/2017]
