In a Paris street decked with tricolor flags and illuminated lanterns, stands a popular dance on the occasion of National Day. In the foreground, groups of people are seated together and share glasses, while behind them, entwined couples are dancing. The painter brings together for this celebration of 14 July a range of familiar figures of the popular Paris and rabble: workers, artisans, domestic workers but also pimps and crooks.

Located in Montmartre since 1881, the Swiss Steinlen is familiar with this moment of jubilation that is the national holiday. Since its inception in 1880, July 14, reminiscent of the fall of the Bastille, symbol of the overthrow of the monarchy, is a moment of crystallization of national identity.
