Gericault produced a group of works representing the elegant aspects of horsemanship and sport during his stay in England in 1820–21 and afterward. The artist studied horses extensively throughout his life, and this composition is derived from traditional English equestrian portraits. Gericault also produced a nearly identical composition in watercolor showing the same rider, whose identity is subject to speculation, on a dappled gray horse (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam).
