Aimed at the Chapel of Compassion church Saint Roch in Paris, this sketch to the theme of the Virgin Comforter is reminiscent of a composition performed in 1855 on a tympanum of the church of Saint-Leu la-Forêt: antiquisante in a niche, the Virgin is represented in majesty and afflicted implore. The final work will show some differences with this sketch: the Virgin shall stand, drop arms to the supplicants, and will rise in a cloud in a warmer light, like the Murillo Madonnas.

In 1856, Sebastien Cornu is charged by the City of Paris to decorate the chapel of Compassion at Saint-Roch. The decoration was completed in 1859 and has a "Christ taken down from the Cross" and "consoling Virgin".
