The minuet is a baroque dance, greatly appreciated the court of Louis XIV. This pleasant subject, under the theme of the ball, took a leading role in the kind of gallant painting, initiated by Antoine Watteau and characteristic eighteenth siècle.Sébastien Le Clerc gets Watteau prom this theme between inside and outside . The portal is open architected on a vast expanse landscape. The artist made his canvas into several groups of characters. Those on the right wear costumes that reflect the importance of the "commedia dell'arte" in entertainment in the second half of the eighteenth century. The painting was put up for sale in Paris, December 26, 1797 (expert J.B.P. Lebrun). Then in 1931 he donated it subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris. He renounced the usufruct in 1942.
