The 19th century masterpiece was created by the painter Leo Gestel. Nowadays, the piece of art is part of the Rijksmuseum's digital collection, which is the largest museum for Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Leo Gestel was a painter, graphic artist, whose artistic style can primarily be classified as Expressionism. The artist was born in 1881 in Woerden, South Holland, Netherlands and deceased at the age of 60 in 1941.
