The painting represents Maria Krafft (1812-1885), the eldest daughter of the artist in front of a window at a desk sitting. The Handlungsort is one of the rooms in the eastern Upper Belvedere from Kustodentrakt in which Johann Peter Krafft as head of the Imperial collection of paintings from 1828 lived with his family. Marie Krafft was herself a painter, learned at an early age with her father, later landscape painting under Thomas Ender (1793-1875) and was trained in lithography. From 1847 she worked exclusively with copying old masters, which was in its time a sought-after artist. Thematically, the presentation follows on the romantic theme of the "window pictures", but without picking up the solitude symbolism of a Caspar David Friedrich. Representations of girls at the window gave contemporary painting rather the possibility of an ideal extension in Picture content: Same as here, the lost in thought outside view sweeps, the sunlight blazes its way into the interior of the room. The mental Entrücktsein the person thus does not substantive loss, but a gain in emotional content, which constantly maintains through the reciprocal meshing of exterior and interior its tension.
