This narrow panel was probably part of a predella, the supporting lower portion of an altarpiece, which no doubt featured other scenes from the Passion of Christ. It is most likely an early work by Hans Maler, who worked in Ulm in southwestern Germany before settling in the Tyrol. He is now known chiefly for portraits painted in the later part of his career for members of the imperial family and other prominent sitters. His earlier religious paintings are a variant on the expressive, patterned style and vivid characterization of an accomplished group of painters working in Ulm and nearby Memmingen, notably Bartholomäus Zeitblom and Bernhard Strigel.

Christ Carrying the Cross was by the artist Hans Maler zu Schwaz in 1520. The original creation has the size: 13 5/16 x 22 5/8 in (33,8 x 57,5 cm) Painted surface: 12 13/16 x 22 in (32,5 x 55,8 cm) and was painted with the medium oil on panel. This artpiece is in the the Art Institute Chicago's digital collection, which is one of the world’s great art museums, housing a collection that spans centuries and the globe. The alignment is in landscape format and has a side ratio of 16 : 9, meaning that the length is 78% longer than the width. Hans Maler zu Schwaz was a male painter of German nationality, whose artistic style can be classified as Northern Renaissance. The painter lived for a total of 46 years, born in 1480 and passed away in 1526.
