A native of Carinthia Hans Gasser was actually trained as a painter. "The Blind Fiddler" is one of the few genre pieces, he painted. the artist was known but as a sculptor. In Vienna he created among other monumental figures for the Arsenal, the City Hall, the old stock exchange, as well as grave monuments for the Central Cemetery. But Gasser's orders took him also to Budapest, Graz, Trieste, Weimar and London. Embedded in a romantic landscape, moralizing scene deals with mercy in several facets. As a literary parallel to this issue Michael Krapf called the story "The Poor Fiddler" by Franz Grillparzer. [¹] A boy leads the seated by the wayside blind man, while a girl some food for the journey in his apron and a drink from the nearby shelter in the background brings. the props of the blind in the left corner of the painting were draped as a painterly still life. The shrine on the right edge refers to the actions of the two children as obligations of Christian life. Notes: [1] Krapf, Michael Hans Gasser. The blind violinist, in: Recent Acquisitions.
