In the foreground, two men pull on a rope to bring on land the fishing net full of fish that we imagine senior. Behind them, a richly adorned woman spins wool looking towards the harpoon fisherman standing on his boat. Beside her, a naked child sitting and playing with a fish. In the background left, two men back their water cast net. At the lake background stands a mountain range whose peaks are covered with snow.

April 18, 1893, the State entrusts Cormon the realization of a decorative ensemble of ten panels wall and a ceiling for the amphitheater of Paleontology and the Museum of Anthropology of Natural History in Paris. Fruit of lengthy documentation and conducting preliminary sketches, the auditorium's decor is inaugurated in 1898 and is still in place today. It presents a series of scenes recreating what one could imagine the early days of humanity in view of new scientific knowledge.
