Original artwork description by the museum (© Copyright - The Metropolitan Museum of Art - www.metmuseum.org)

This is one of the many still lifes of fish produced by Chase after the very favorable reception of his 1904 painting entitled "An English Cod" (National Gallery of Art, Corcoran Collection, Washington, D.C.). "Fish" is executed with the bravura brushwork that reflects his training in Munich and also recalls Spanish still lifes of the seventeenth century, in which fluidly painted objects are presented against a dark background. The arrangement here features a striped bass and a salmon. A weakfish lies directly on the table and a bowl is visible in the background.
