Mazzolino’s precious devotional panels and narratives were appreciated at the court of Ferrara by patrons such as Duchess Lucrezia Borgia. His figures and landscape are developed in a highly individual and expressive style and executed with true refinement. In this Lamentation he refers back to the great traditions of Ferrarese painting while also showing a knowledge of his contemporary artists, including Albrecht Dürer. This is one of his finest works and for centuries was in the grand collection of the Pio di Savoia family in Rome.
