In 1885 Toorop was living in Brussels, where he was a member of the artists’ circle called Les Vingt (the 20). He was exposed there to the work of Gustave Courbet (on view in this gallery), who often painted with a palette knife. Two years later, Toorop made this sea-scape, also using a palette knife in places. The effect is realistic; however when seen close up, it features an incredible mixture of colours.

The modern art artwork called "The Sea near Katwijk" was painted by the male artist Jan Toorop. Nowadays, the artpiece is in the the digital collection of Rijksmuseum, which is the largest museum for Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages to the present day. The artist, painter, graphic artist, postage stamp designer Jan Toorop was a European artist, whose style can primarily be classified as Symbolism. The Dutch artist lived for a total of 70 years, born in the year 1858 in Purworejo, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia and died in the year 1928.
