General information by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (© - by The Metropolitan Museum of Art - www.metmuseum.org)

The sketch should be dated to the very end of the 1750s, not too long before the artist left Venice for Madrid. It does not relate to a finished altarpiece. The bright light and coloring and the exotic costumes of the three kings are in marked contrast to the general sobriety of mood.
