Jane Buller, the sitter in this elegant portrait, married William Lemon in 1771 and bore ten children. Lord Lemon commissioned George Romney to paint half-length portraits of himself and his wife in 1881, when Lady Lemon was forty-years old. She sat for the painting on six occasions in Romney’s London studio. Posing the sitter in an armchair against a landscape background became a common convention in later Georgian British portraiture. Romney portrays his subject with a gentle touch.

Description of the over 240 year-old work of art

In 1780 George Romney created the rococo artpiece. The version of the artpiece measures the size - 50 x 40 in (127 x 101,6 cm). Oil on canvas was applied by the British artist as the medium of the artpiece. What is more, this artwork is in the the The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. This masterpiece, which belongs to the public domain is being provided with courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Robert Lehman Collection, 1975. The creditline of the artpiece is: Robert Lehman Collection, 1975. The alignment is portrait and has an aspect ratio of 1 : 1.2, which means that the length is 20% shorter than the width. George Romney was a male painter, whose style was primarily Rococo. The British painter was born in 1734 and passed away at the age of 68 in 1802.
