The waterfalls of Tivoli, a town east of Rome on the slopes of the Sabine hills, were among the most popular motifs for foreign painters in Italy. However rohden chose an unconventional neckline of his view. So he limited the presentation to the flood waters that tumble from a great height in several stages in the River Aniene. The natural spectacle is reproduced in strict low angle. The viewing angle is so far limited that the Sybillentempel that connects the upper right corner of the building, can no longer be detected in the image. Born in Kassel Rohden came even as a 17 year old to Rome and joined there the circle around Joseph Anton Koch. After his death he became the main representative of the "ideal" landscape painting in Rome. Characteristic of his painting is the most accurate and careful signs of the special features of nature.
