The American painter was born in the year 1796 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, United States and passed away at the age of 76 in the year 1872.

The legacy of George Catlin is today highly debated, but in the 19th century his portraits, including this one, were heavily tied to the notion of the 'noble savage'. This man's hair, jewellery and make-up would have seemed incredibly exotic to non-native Americans and Europeans.
