On the Place de l'Etoile, night, crowds of Parisians flock to the Arc de Triomphe to the ashes of the Unknown Soldier installation under the monument.

Wanted by Napoleon in 1806 to honor the victories of the French armies, the Arc de Triomphe was built very slowly in terms of Jean Chalgrin. It ends up being inaugurated in 1836 under the reign of Louis Philippe. It has become a hotbed of national commemorations, especially since the burial of the Unknown Soldier 11 November 1920, which this painting is a key witness.
