At 95, John was exiled on the island of Patmos by the Emperor Domitian. It was during this exile that will write the book of the Apocalypse. John is dressed in red, as is the tradition, and is accompanied by the eagle symbol. A photograph of the painting is preserved in the archives of the Brunner Gallery. In the early twentieth century, the painting was in the collection of Charles Vincent Ocampo, who donated it, subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris in 1931. He renounced the usufruct in 1942.
