The dealer Ambroise Vollard Art (1868-1939) poses in Cezanne's studio at the Villa des Arts. He is dressed in a brown suit with a bow tie. The bearded face slightly tilted forward, Vollard holds in his right hand a book on his crossed legs. The light that comes from the left illuminates window portion the body of the merchant who stands against a darker background.

Ambroise Vollard has repeatedly posed for portraits painted by artists that helped to make known through his activity an art dealer. The Cezanne painting is the first of these portraits were made. Cézanne demanded its model to stand still as an apple. The portrait remained unfinished at the end of a hundred sittings. Vollard recounted this experience in his memoir.
