Rogier van der Weyden was one of the most influential artists of the fifteenth century. He settled in Brussels, where he was named official city painter in 1436 and maintained a busy workshop. He executed altarpieces and portraits for religious institutions, court functionaries, and the powerful dukes of the Burgundian Netherlands.

Inscribed: Reverse: coat of arms of Jean Gros,1 GRACES . A DIEV. (on banderole), JG (flanking escutcheon) is the artwork's inscription. Rogier van der Weyden was a painter of Dutch nationality, whose artistic style can primarily be assigned to Northern Renaissance. The artist was born in the year 1399 in Tournai, Province de Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium and passed away at the age of 65 in the year 1464.
