The popularity of Joos van Cleve's Holy Family compositions provided an impetus for the mass production of paintings on this theme; the present example is by an artist in Joos's workshop. He transferred the original design by pouncing, but was clearly less adept at handling and execution than the master.

The 16th century masterpiece The Holy Family was painted by Joos van Cleve in 1515. The more than 500 year old original measures the following size - 20 3/8 x 14 5/8 in (51,8 x 37,1 cm) and was made with the technique of oil on wood. The piece of art can be viewed in in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection in New York City, New York, United States of America. Joos van Cleve was a male Netherlandish painter from the Netherlands, whose art style can primarily be classified as Northern Renaissance. The European painter lived for 56 years and was born in 1485 in Cleves, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and died in 1541 in Antwerp, Antwerpen province, Flanders, Belgium.
