The artist has doubled cardboard two plates to ivory where he wanted to paint skin tones. He then tied the level around ivory by using coated paper and the whole in a white ground.

The painter is standing near a bay ridden by his young son Paul horseback. The latter, born in Paris on 15 June 1794, appears to have three or four years on this miniature, which is around the 1797 to 1798 (as also shows the handwritten inscription on the back of the work).
