Allegory revolutionary. Sketch for the composition provided by Jeaurat Bertry to the Convention on 20 Messidor in II (8 July 1794). In the foreground, center, a beam lances topped with a civic crown and a Phrygian cap; at its foot, a dog, a flowing cornucopia assignats and, right, a sans-culotte foot treading the old currency. On the left, two girls shaking hands, a rooster watching over his family and a sheep. In the background, in front of a wooden pyramid placed on a pedestal with inscriptions; a truncated column placed on a rock, also inscribed before which a soldier standby on a cylinder; on the right, another truncated column. In the background, a village and a guillotine. Above the beam, a medallion of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the watchful eye of the Convention and two Republican flags.

This work, dated 20 Ventose 1794 (10 March 1794), is preparatory to a table provided by the National Convention Jeaurat Bertry on 20 Messidor Year II (8 July 1794). The Universal Monitor messidor 21 describes the final table. We note many differences from our sketch, the most significant being the presence of a bust of Voltaire: "[...] We arrive at a sacred wood [...] and among the busts that adorn it, the patriot recognizes the Peletier and Marat, martyr of Liberty, with Voltaire and Rousseau, prophets of this goddess. "It is possible that Jeaurat had first thought honoring Rousseau, whose remains were being transferred to the Pantheon, then qu'amplifiant his subject, he has introduced Voltaire to a broader membership, to the glory of Revolution. Furthermore, an X-ray revealed in 1952, the presence of two painted under which appeared the medallion portraits of Lepelletier and Marat, sticking one of Rousseau. These were probably covered in 1795, when the effigies of two "martyrs of Freedom" were removed from public places.
