The Man Who Laughs appeared in the Hughes edition in 1886, then joined volume shipments. This gloom is the model of the unsigned engraving but vrasemblablement conducted by Fortune Méaulle reproduced in frontispiece, after the preface.

Furthermore, alignment of the digital reproduction is portrait with an image ratio of 1 : 1.2, which implies that the length is 20% shorter than the width.
