Franz Eybl one of the leading portraitist of Viennese society and the court. With any of his models, however, he was about as honest as with himself from his hand. There are several self-portraits that show him with a critical eye. Also he likes dealt with the play of light and shadow. In this representation, which is shrouded in a mysterious red, the light source is to think under the picture on the left. The incident at a shallow angle rays emphasize the proportions of the face especially sharp, the curled end stress and divide the face into a reddish and greenish pale half.
