Although signed and dated "F. Cormon 89", this work served as a model for the frontispiece, engraved by Le Couteux, the third volume of "The Legend of centuries" of the National edition which appeared in 1886. Part the collection of publisher Emile Testard painting was likely exposed to the "house of Victor Hugo," Victor Hugo Avenue (former Avenue d'Eylau) briefly opened to the public a few years after the poet's death.
