To reduce the risk of destruction of bridges and boats by the debacles or winter floods of the Seine, is implanted in some narrowed places, platforms (wooden breakwaters) which were intended to keep the flow of ice and protect boats. A central opening called the sluices that could clog if necessary, allow a normal river traffic. Paris counted two booms.
