Between 1891 and 1902, William Merritt Chase was a highly influential teacher at the Shinnecock Summer Art School in Long Island, New York, where he painted numerous landscapes of the surrounding area. In Wind-Swept Sands, Chase used rapid brushstrokes to depict the dunes and vegetation, thin washes for the sky, and an overall gray tone to indicate an overcast day. Chase’s teaching method was rooted in the French Impressionist practice of painting outdoors in order to take advantage of natural light and changing weather conditions.

Oil on canvas was applied by the American painter as the technique for the piece of art. The original artwork is inscribed with the information: "signed lower left: "Wm M. Chase."". The artpiece can be viewed in in the digital art collection of Art Institute Chicago, which is one of the world’s great art museums, housing a collection that spans centuries and the globe. On top of that, alignment of the digital reproduction is landscape and has an aspect ratio of 1.2 : 1, which means that the length is 20% longer than the width. William Merritt Chase was a male painter, whose art style can be attributed mainly to Impressionism. The artist lived for 67 years - born in 1849 in Williamsburg, Wayne county, Indiana, United States and passed away in the year 1916 in New York City, New York state, United States.
