The "mills painter" and could be dubbed as the mill Meindert Hobbema pattern marked his work. Of some paintings which he made the subject, it is considered one of the finest and possibly the reference point of the série. On recognize here the mills of Deventer city of eastern Holland, the painter discovered while traveling in company of his master, Jacob van Ruisdael, in the 1660s He brought many sketches, he then reused at will, carrying out reconstructions in the workshop from patterns captured "live" in full nature.Ainsi, mills take place in the green countryside while they were in fact located in urban areas. Through this, Hobbema gives his painting a picturesque character, not devoid of poetry. The windmill with a red roof, its reflection in the water treated with virtuosity, the light that bathes the nature and the various figures that animate help make this landscape a haven of paix.On sometimes wanted to see in the mill grounds an evocation of human destiny and an illustration of the ingenuity of the Dutch engineers. Highlighting the grandeur of the Golden Age, the work of the Petit Palais is a veritable manifesto of life in Holland in the seventeenth century, reinvented by artists to give their paintings in an ideal image of nature.

The painting was sold in Paris in 1762, as a work of Jacob van Ruisdael, for 1800 pounds. Then he was in the collection of Emmanuel-Joseph Augustin van den Meersche, Lord of Berlaere to Moerseke and Voordenhove, which broke up in July 12, 1791, in Ghent. Thaddeus Joseph-Antoine-Hyacinthe van Saceghem, senator and director of the Ghent Academy acquired it at this auction for 320 pounds. The fall of the selling price is explained by the fact that the picture was then attributed to Hobbema. Saceghem kept up Table 2-3 June 1851, when it was sold to Theodore Patureau (sale Brussels, Le Roy, No. 31, 85 000frs) .Théodore Patureau only kept the picture in its collection 6 years since April 21, 1857 the work appeared in a Paris sale (sale Paris, Le Roy & Laneuville, No. 9) and was bought by the Berlin banker Gustav Schulze, priced at 96 500frs. This banker destined canvas in the Berlin Museum, but he instead sold to the Duke of Morny, at an unknown date, for 105 000frs.Charles-Auguste de Morny, statesman, separated himself on June 1, 1865 (sale paris, Laneuville, No. 52). These are the Dutuit brothers who acquired it for 81 000frs. They retained the painting in their collection Rouen until 1902, when Augustus Dutuit bequeathed to the City of Paris.
