A waterfall, dry vegetation, a mountain in the distance, a sky with clouds. Ruisdael painted here a state of mind landscape, dramatic and oppressante.Installé atmosphere in Amsterdam in 1657, the painter mainly treated subjects featuring cityscapes, seascapes and mountain scenery. This last theme is shown in this table. One feels the impact of his travels in the United Provinces, and perhaps in Norway, on the vocabulary he emploie.L'atmosphère cold and damp, and the figure of the seated peasant, seen from behind, lost in the vastness of the landscape, give the canvas an elegiac character, which contributed to the fortunes of Ruisdael. Because it did not just enter in nature motifs for his paintings, he recomposed them later in his studio and offered each an atmosphere all its own. So even grouped in series, each painting has its uniqueness.

The painting was kept in England, in the collection of Mr. Boswell Norwich. On 7 July 1919, Charles Vincent Ocampo bought from the merchant E. B. Haynes, in Buenos Aires. He then brought in France, to hang in his mansion of the seventeenth arrondissement of Paris. In 1931 he donated it, subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris, and renounced the usufruct in 1942.
