Hochstetter, Ferdinand * 30.04.1829 Esslingen (Germany), † 18.07.1884 Vienna, geologist and prehistory. Took 1857-59 at the Novara expedition in part, where he explored New Zealand. Professor at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna, in 1876 director of the Natural History Museum, built the anthropological-ethnographic department. President of the Geological Society, encouraged the creation of the Prehistoric Commission of the Academy of Sciences (1878). According to him, the 'Hochstetter-Dom' (mountain in New Zealand) and the 'Hochstetter Fjord' in Greenland are named. Ferdinand Freiherr von Hochstetter is a masterpiece created by Franz Rumpler. The beyond 130 year-old original measures the size of 140,5 x 90,5 cm. Oil on canvas was applied by the German painter as the technique for the artpiece. Today, the artwork is included in the Belvedere's collection, which is one of Europe's most famous museums with three locations that blends the experience of architecture and art in a unique way. Moreover, alignment of the digital reproduction is portrait and has a ratio of 2 : 3, which implies that the length is 33% shorter than the width. The painter, university teacher Franz Rumpler was a European artist, whose art style can be attributed primarily to Realism. The painter was born in 1848 in Tachau / Tachov, Bohemia and died at the age of 74 in the year 1922 in , Klosterneuburg, Lower Austria.
