Original artwork description by Belvedere (© Copyright - by Belvedere - Belvedere)

The painting, one of those images that the Vienna Secession had dedicated the country for the establishment of the Modern Gallery, belongs to the group of so-called 'Nirvana Images'. Segantini refers in this work on the poem 'Nirvana' by Luigi Illica in which explicitly expressed that it comes to women who have abortions. Segantini who sees the essence of the woman in her maternity, she points than women who lust gave themselves wanting to take without the consequences of motherhood and therefore purgatory to suffer. In an article in 'Ver Sacrum' Segantini himself speaks of the 'vain and sterile lustful' that he wanted to punish by 'the punishment in purgatory' painted. In the 'evil mothers' he reflects the suffering, the purification and the redemption of women in the same image. In the background one of the women to a tree is shown tied up trying to free themselves desperate to breastfeed her child, which she hears coming through the snow cover and to which it is connected by a road like an umbilical cord. The focus of the moment of hemostasis is shown, while in the image depth from the already shaded mountains dancing women have their children in their arms and turn to the sky. Segantini increases the intensity of the image by a striking and detailed naturalism. Because in addition to all symbolic content the light of these mountains is the dominant theme. His divisionism serves all the modulations of light over the snow surface, the ring of mountains and play in the evening sky, the glow on the skin of the woman or the show through the thin fabric of her gown. Impressive are tree body and to a single, formed from opposing swings Formarabeske to an expressive character.
