Original information about the work of art by the museum's website (© - by The Metropolitan Museum of Art - www.metmuseum.org)

Marc Anthony’s Roman galleon has arrived in Egypt and, overcome by Cleopatra’s beauty, he bows to kiss her hand. It is the beginning of his undoing. Having betrayed Rome, he is defeated and kills himself; Cleopatra then also commits suicide. African attendants and a turbaned figure signify foreign lands, in contrast with Cleopatra’s Europeanized appearance. Her costume is inspired by theater practice and by seventeenth-century fashion. This is an oil sketch, or modello, for a huge canvas in the former Yusupov country palace at Arkhangelskoye, near Moscow.
