Still-life painter William Michael Harnett excelled at trompe l’oeil, painting that fools the eye, through realistic depiction. In For Sunday’s Dinner, a chicken hangs in front of a painted door with its throat cut and most of its feathers plucked; a few remaining downy spots stand out against the puckered, pimpled flesh. The metal door hinges, on the right side of the canvas, frame the chicken and echo its form. The painting’s title and the rough, blemished surface of the door suggest a country dinner, the homey meal evoking nostalgia for a simpler past.

Description of the more than 130 year-old painting

This piece of art was created by the male artist William Michael Harnett. The beyond 130 year-old original measures the size: 94,3 × 53,6 cm (37 1/8 × 21 1/8 in) and was manufactured on the medium oil on canvas. The artwork has the following inscription: signed, lower left: "Harnett/1888". It is included in the Art Institute Chicago's digital art collection. We are pleased to mention that the artpiece, which belongs to the public domain is being provided with courtesy of Art Institute Chicago. The creditline of the artpiece is: Wilson L. Mead Fund. What is more, the alignment is in portrait format with an aspect ratio of 9 : 16, which implies that the length is 45% shorter than the width. William Michael Harnett was a painter of Irish nationality, whose style was primarily Realism. The painter lived for 44 years, born in 1848 in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland and deceased in the year 1892 in New York City, New York state, United States.
