This portrait of old man sitting was painted during the short stay of Gauguin in Arles. From October 23 to December 26, 1888 the painter moved into the workshop of the South at the invitation of Van Gogh. Several indications for attributing the painting to stay in Arles Gauguin Out: The chair is identical to the one painted in the still life by Van Gogh: "Gauguin's Chair" (Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum) and the canvas bag color brown bought by Gauguin and used by the two artists during their cohabitation. At that time, just Gauguin painting "Vision of the Sermon" and develop an original style that will continue during his stay in Tahiti.
